LA FRONTERA: Artists along the U.S. - Mexican Border
A project by Stefan Falke
I photographed about 200 artists and art supporters who live and work along the 2000 miles long US-Mexico border to show the vibrant cultural side of a region that is usually portrayed by the international media with the sole focus on violent crime and illegal immigration.
Artists are the pulse of society and I believe if we ignore the cultural side of troubled places, we will soon stop caring about them all together.
I met with both internationally renowned as well as locally known artists. My work is not about the value of their art in the eyes of the art market, but about the positive impact the artists have on their communities.
The cities I visited and photographed artists:
Mexico: Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo, Ciudad Juarez, Agua Prieta, Naco, Nogales, Mexicali, Tecate, Tijuana.
USA: Brownsville, Harlingen, McAllen, El Paso, Sells, Ajo, Calexico, San Diego.
This body of work has been exhibited in many solo shows in Germany, the United States and Mexico and has been featured by The New York Times, Wired, the BBC, Huffington Post, and many others.
The book "LA FRONTERA" was published by Edition Faust in Frankfurt, in 2014.
The project is ongoing.
